Creating a home that’s unique to you and reflects your personality can be a tricky business. Whether you’re looking for a cool, calm and collected place to relax or an eclectic mix of trends and styles, there’s one big thing that makes all the difference in your house: colour.
We’ve been inspired big time by this infographic designed by Distinctive Chesterfields. Showing all the different meanings of colour and what they symbolise, we’re thinking about how you can use colour to spruce up your home.
Keep it warm and cosy
How?
Use brown in the living room and rich plum accents in the bedroom.
Brown is a natural, earthy and steadfast colour. It will keep a room grounded and cosy while also suggesting refinement in richer shades.
Purple in deep and regal tones is powerful while looking sophisticated. In lighter hues it can be feminine and romantic, in darker tones it will suit a shared bedroom.
2.     Make it fun
How?
Add splashes of yellow to your décor in kitchens and play areas.
Go all out with in children’s bedrooms and play areas with full yellow walls, or use yellow as an accent against cool grey neutrals. Yellow symbolises optimism, happiness and creativity, and it’s even rumoured to increase metabolism!
3.     Stay safe with neutrals
How?
Use in any room of the house as a base colour.
Everyone might say that neutrals are boring, but we say otherwise. Neutrals will never go out of fashion, can be paired with anything and represent stability. Black can look ultra-sleek and modern, white represents purity and cleanliness (who can resist crisp white bed sheets?) and beige is warm and cosy, but grey is the “new neutral†that can look elegant and peaceful.
4.     Introduce passion
How?
Be bold and give your dining room a makeover in red.
Red is renowned as the colour of love and passion, but beware of going too bright and pushing that passion into anger! The colour red is known for encouraging appetite and stimulating conversation so is ideal for dining rooms where you’ll host many a successful dinner party.
5.     Create a peaceful atmosphere
How?
Decorate your bathroom in shades of blue.
The bathroom is the ideal room for escape and relaxation, so go all out in shades of blue for a peaceful and serene environment. As the natural colour of the sea and sky, associated with restoring and calm waters, turquoise and azure are ideal for the bathroom.
