  1. Declutter the area

The first step of Feng Shui is to take care of any existing clutter. After all, you can’t create a happy, tranquil environment if the room is cluttered with things you just don’t need. You don’t have to opt for a totally minimalistic look, but it is important to make sure you have plenty of open space.

  1. Getting the colour right

One thing that’s going to make a massive difference to the overall look and feel of the room is the colour scheme. With Feng Shui you don’t usually see bold, bright colours on the walls. Stick with a neutral, tranquil colour and use your possessions to add warmth into the space.

  1. Achieve the right sofa placement

Once you’ve got your clutter sorted out, it’s time to re-organise your furniture. As your sofa is the main focal point in the room, it’s important to make sure it is facing the door. This gives you a sense of control which is actually part of human nature.

  1. Adding a water element

All five elements should ideally be incorporated into the room and water can be best represented by a water fountain or aquarium. If you’re choosing an aquarium, place it in the south east corner of the room and preferably choose either a rectangular or square tank. This particular element brings relaxation and tranquillity into the space.

  1. Balancing fire and water

If you’re short of space, you can combine both fire and water by placing a mirror just above the fireplace. This balances the two elements out nicely and creates another great focal point in the room.

  1. Taking care of the lighting

The way the room lights up is another important aspect of Feng Shui. Make sure there are no dark corners in the room and create layers of light. This means including table and floor lamps as well as a main ceiling light.

  1. Create a soothing ambience with aromatherapy diffusers

Good quality, clean air is something else to focus on. As well as making sure you open your windows regularly, it is also a good idea to invest in an aromatherapy diffuser. Essential oils are well known for their healing, calming and health benefits.

  1. Have your TV in a diagonally facing position

Placing your TV in the corner of the room at a diagonal angle definitely works best in Feng Shui. It should never be the dominant feature of the room and placing it diagonally helps to take focus away from the TV.

  1. Add live green plants to the room

Lush green plants will add a sense of vitality and life, not to mention help increase the amount of air flowing throughout the living room. If you place a plant to the east of the room, it is said to bring you health and vitality, whilst in the south it will bring recognition and fame.

  1. Beware of Sha Chi

When deciding upon the right placement of furniture, beware of Sha Chi. This is basically negative energy caused by sharp pointed objects directed at your furniture.

  1. Focus on one element

Whilst it is recommended you incorporate all five elements into the room, it is highly recommended you focus most of your energy on one main element. Whether this be fire, water or wood for example, choose one element and stick to it in order to achieve the best balance.
